As unemployment rises and we spend a disturbing amount of time at home, the world's educators hook us up with some tuition-free online college to occupy our minds.
The massive open online courses (MOOCs) rarely lead to transferable college credit, but many schools aren't presently charging for their online certificate programs. Regardless, any of these online classes will help boost your resume and add more tools to your box.
Specifically, MOOCs are free online courses that cover a particular subject. They're accessible to all with unlimited enrollments and no admissions process (some may require parental supervision for students under 13). The duration of each course can be as short as one week or up to 16 weeks. The beauty is that many MOOCs are self-paced with auto-grading systems, allowing you to begin and complete your courses any time, any place.
In a time where college can cost more than a house, it's ever more important that we snatch up these opportunities. And you can't beat the variety. Hundreds of universities across the world (939, to be exact) have put out MOOCs, with schools like MIT offering over 200.
You can access MOOCs through a number of organizations, like Coursera and edX, some of which were founded by universities like Stanford and Harvard. You do have to sign up through each website, but they won't ask for much more than an email to create an account. Certain MOOCs can require payment for aspects like completion certificates and graded assignments, but the general course content is free. You also have the ability to apply for financial aid and scholarship with some MOOC platforms, including Coursera.
Taking the MOOC industry even further, many private companies, like the following, have created free e-courses:

- Rosetta Stone
- IBM
- Nikon
Because of the vast amount of free online classes out there, this article will focus solely on those that American universities have created. This website makes it simple to find a course to match your interests and goals. MOOC availability changes throughout each year, but Class Central's database does a great job of keeping current.
Again, there are a lot of these suckers, so we're keeping it simple by including the higher-reviewed courses and more unique subjects. We've organized our list by subject, taking care to include at least one class from every MOOC-participating college in the U.S. Use the below table of contents to jump to any of the sections.
A few notes about the listings:
- Courses that have specific Start Dates are listed first within each subject
- If our sources didn't provide a learner Level, we provided our own based off of the course's reviews
- The course Ratings should read as " # of stars on Class Central & # of stars on the course's specific learning platform". The ratings are out of 5 stars, and some courses may lack a rating from one or both websites
- The Duration timings are estimations and suggestions. Everyone works at their own pace
- If a course qualifies for more than one of these lists, we included it in just one
